Nahuelbuta Mountain Range

Mountain Range. This is a geological formation older than the Andes Mountains and home to more than fifty percent of Chile's plant species, in a stretch that runs from the Biobío River to the Imperial River in the Araucanía Region in the south of the country.

This great mountain range is considered an "island habitat" and a world treasure of biodiversity. The "Wallmapu" is the sacred territory for our Mapuche people, a symbol of historical resistance and a current and latent threat to their natural space.

It is estimated that the loss of native and endemic vegetation exceeds seventy percent due to the unbalanced and harmful exploitation of the forestry industry. Nahuelbuta, Nawüelfuta in Mapuche language, means Puma Grande, habitat of the Chilean cougar, which still lives in this unique and temperate rainforest of South America.
